Hoe Ling, a Malaysian engineering professor who teaches at Columbia University in New York, has won a big award in his field of geosynthetics in Berlin.
Okay, I had to look up "geosynthetics." It's the use of synthetic materials - fibres and such - to solve challenges in civil engineering such as stabilising slopes and such.
Prof Ling, who was given the award during the 1oth International Conference on Geosynthetics in Berlin, does work with international agencies in typhoon and earthquake-struck areas.
This made me think about the latest mudslides in Cameron Highlands and how we could use some of this technology in Malaysia.
