So in Malaysia this 2013, Saturday November 2nd and Tuesday 5th November are both public holidays. So if you take a day off from work on Monday 4th November, you have a wonderfully long 4-day weekend. Road trip anyone?

Within 2 hours drive of KL:
Port Dickson - I've stayed at the Thistle and they have nice, spacious sea-facing rooms. These rooms can sleep 2 adults and 2 young children comfortably if you don't mind having one child in bed with you and another on an extra bed (request this while booking). There are a couple of restaurants on site as well, so you don't have to drive the family out to sleepy PD town for grub three times a day. The hotel is beach fronting and there is a nice lawn before you get to the beach, great for kids to run around on. The free-form pool is large and, more importantly, there are two separate slides for the kids to pick from.

Melaka - If you are going it alone or with a partner, and are looking for some old world charm south of Penang, try out YTL's Majestic Hotel (http://www.majesticmalacca.com) or the cute but basic Puri Hotel (http://www.hotelpuri.com). There are many more hotels in Melaka but what you are really there for is the walk around Jonker and Heeren Streets, and the street eats. The pedestrian sections get really crowded on a weekend, it almost seems as if all of KL is there.

Seremban - Been told about The Shorea (http://www.theshorea.com) for some jungle peace and quiet. It is a resort nestled in a forest reserve, so you can be assured of nice jungle treks while there.

Janda Baik - Check out the Aman Rimba (http://www.amanrimba.com) and Enderong (http://enderong.com/enderong-resort) retreats. With Aman Rimba, it is better if you go with a larger group, to fill up the villas. The whole compound is yours to enjoy. Enderong Resort gives you an option of booking single rooms, a cottage or even a whole 7 bedroom house. Both resorts are within 15 minutes drive of each other.

Within 5 hours drive of KL:
Penang - So many places to stay! Check out Lone Pine (http://www.lonepinehotel.com/) on Batu Ferringhi for some beachside access, E&O Hotel (http://e-o-hotel.com/index.php) in the middle of town, 23 Love Lane (http://www.23lovelane.com/) also in town, Seven Terraces (http://www.seventerraces.com/index.html), the cute Straits Collection set of four pre-war shophouses turned apartments (http://www.straitscollection.com.my/index.htm) and so many more!

A great place to visit while in Penang is China House (http://chinahouse.com.my/) which melds F&B, gallery and theatre into one space.

Singapore - Great place! But come back home ok?
